Coronado Art in the Park Jul 01

Spreckels Park Gazebo ~ where the bands play

Because I live in Coronado, I have many people who do not live here ask me about Art in the Park. Usually, they have heard about it and want to know when it is. Some have been before and want to stop by to see the works of a favored artist, but forget which Sundays it is held.

Sometimes, I think those of us who live here take this special event for granted because it is a regularly scheduled happening. You walk or drive by and say, “Art in the Park today,” but don’t stop to wander through the displays.

With the Concerts in the Park now playing throughout the summer, I have taken the time to look at the wonderful pieces of art offered by these talented artisans. I have upon occasion spoken to many of the artists and find their stories as fascinating as their art.

Art in the Park is presented by the Coronado Art Association and is held in Spreckels Park (Orange Avenue across from the Coronado Library) the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month, year round. The official time is from 9:00am – 4:00pm, but some set up earlier and some linger longer.

The number of participating artists may vary depending on the day, weather or time of year. There are over 50 artists who have been approved to participate by a five person jury. The artists are all from San Diego County and represent the areas of painting, photography, ceramics, etching, stained glass, wood and metal working and more.

Participating artists include:

Ronald Bennett is an award winning photography.

Sumiko Braithwaite creates unique “Double Wall” pottery.

Jim Cornwell creates amazing pieces of art through wood working.

Elaine Davis creates paintings using various medias.

Clara Evans paints with oils, acrylic and watercolor.

Robert Gerdes is s noted for his paintings of Coronado, La Jolla and the mountain and desert areas near San Diego.

Mary Helmreich works with water colors.

Don Hubbard specializes in the Japanese art of fish printing (gyotaku).

Kay Frances Hubbard specializes in water colors.

Bruce Muirhead is an artistic photographer who has traveled the world capturing images.

Katy Reeve-Weesner specializes in water colors.

Creela Martin Villani prefers working with oils.

Uwe Werner paints animals, seascapes, and children.

John Yato specializes in water colors.

George Zucconi is a photographic artist.

Come to Spreckels Park on the first or third Sunday of any month and take a tour of the delightful works of arts shown by these very talented artists.

Coronado Home Harvest Jun 22

Coronado Home Harvest (CHH) was recently formed by a group of dedicated backyard gardeners and local foodies. Given the weather here in Coronado and the active gardening community, this may be the start of something big!

The outline for this all volunteer organization is based on a monthly meeting where members bring their extra homegrown fruit, vegetables, flowers and cuttings to share and exchange with a goal of promoting health and community.

If you do not have produce to share, you may donate baked or hand made goods, recipes, and such. Also, the CHH encourages neighbors to work together – perhaps you could harvest fruit from a tree in your neighborhood whose owner cannot do it alone and the fruit would otherwise fall to the ground and rot.

Donations are accepted between 8 and 10 am. The donations are sorted and divided up between 10 am and 12 pm. Once all the donations have been sorted and bagged, members may pick up their goodies between 12 and 1 pm.

The CHH also plans on holding talks on organic gardening methods, container farming, nutrition, cooking and related topics during the exchange.

The first meeting of Coronado Home Harvest is this coming Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Winn Room, Coronado Library.

Future meetings have been scheduled for July 17th and August 21st with more dates to follow.

Membership is free – to sign up you need to send your contact information to CHH at info@coronadohomeharvest.org

You can view the participation guidelines to find out more information.

This is another wonderful example of the strong community spirit here in Coronado!

To your good health & harvest!

Hotel del Coronado Welcomes Christmas Nov 29
Hotel del Coronado Christmas Lights

Hotel del Coronado Christmas Lights

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday ~ a day to gather with family and friends and simply appreciate all that we have. In addition to its own meaning, Thanksgiving is the kick off for the Holiday Season. I think the season officially starts at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the arrival of Santa Claus.

This weekend, as I drive, walk and ride my bicycle all over Coronado, I see houses being adorned with bright lights, decorated Christmas trees standing proud in front windows and store windows festive with holiday ornaments. They all seem to appear suddenly to herald the start of the holidays.

One of the most beautiful holiday tributes is the Hotel del Coronado outlined with 100,000 twinkling white lights. It is a magical sight as you drive west over the Coronado Bridge with the ocean and Point Loma in the background especially at dusk.

As I’ve said many times, Coronado embraces every holiday and celebrates each of them to the max. The Hotel del Coronado joins in the Holiday Season with gusto. Each year a theme is chosen and the resort is adorned from head to toe with holiday décor. This year’s theme is “Merry and Bright” and I am looking forward to experiencing the magic.

Although the lights have already been placed on the outside of the hotel, the official launch happens next Wednesday, December 2 from 4pm to 7pm. The event, called “Holiday Festival…A Family Celebration,” includes the arrival of Santa Claus and his elves at Santa’s Village, the lighting of the tree in the lobby, musical entertainment, hot cocoa and other libations and the opportunity to ice skate beach side at the outdoor ice-skating rink on the Windsor Lawn. The festivities will culminate with a spectacular fireworks show.

With the Hotel’s event on Wednesday and the upcoming Holiday Parade on Friday, by the end of next week Coronado will be in full holiday bloom. Coronado is one of the best places to experience some holiday enchantment. So, come on over and fill your spirit with holiday cheer.
