Coronado Bridge Documentary Author: Coronado Cookie Jul 21

As many of you know, this year is the 40th anniversary of the Coronado Bridge (aka the San Diego Coronado Bay Bridge).

In honor of the anniversary, documentary producers Village Videography, created “San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge”. In this film they cover the bridge debate which started in the 1920’s and continued until 1967 when ground was broken to start the bridge construction.

Even then, as you can see from the film, not everyone was in agreement with the erection of the bridge.

The production also covers the construction, the bridge inauguration in 1969, the creation of Chicano Park beneath the bridge landing, and the bridge’s intense maintenance program.

The film debuted last year on June 10, 2009 at the City of Coronado’s 40th Anniversary Bridge Celebration.

You can see the film for yourself on August 2nd and 3rd on Coronado’s Time Warner Channel 19. It will be broadcast at 3:00pm each day and again at 8:0pm.

Coronado Weather Author: Coronado Cookie Jul 07

As I look outside, I have to remind myself that it really is summer. With the Coronado weather being what it is, it doesn’t feel like summer at all.

They are saying that it is just June gloom carrying over into July. The mornings are gray and cool. It was even misting this morning. Sometimes the sun will burn off the thick marine layer for a few precious sunny hours. At those times, the sun is strong and standing in the direct sunlight feels hot. Yet there has been a cold breeze for a few months now that makes it cool in the shade even when the sun does manage to make an appearance.

I sit here wearing shorts (a concession to the fact that it is summer) and a sweatshirt (a concession to the chilled air flowing in through the sliding glass door of the balcony).

I’ve just read an article about the massive heat wave hitting the East coast and I realize that living in Coronado I have forgotten how hot the summer can be in other parts of the country. The contrast is especially true with today’s weather.

Having grown up on the East coast in the Mid-Hudson Valley, I can remember the suffocating heat and humidity that was summer. While I grew up in the country, I lived in new York City for six years and I remember a summer when my rommates and I sat through three showings of the same movie just to beat the heat. As I read of people’s creative ways to try to escape the heat and the worries of those whose health issues make the heat a very real danger, I guess I can tolerate a little gloom.

And, the weather reports are predicting sunny afternoons this weekend. Perhaps summer will make an appearance after all.

In the meantime, my thoughts are with those suffering through the heat wave. I hope that they will be safe and stay healthy.

Look at these lovely Coronado themed Christmas ornaments I found over at Café Press. I just love this Hotel del Coronado ornament. I may even keep it out after Christmas

We were visiting with friends before the Coronado Holiday Parade where I delighted in my friend Victoria’s Coronado themed Christmas tree. She has collected an amazing array of ornaments that all have something to do with Coronado.

Liking the concept, I started to do some searching for Coronado themed ornaments of my own. What I quickly found were these wonderful ornaments at Café Press.

Hotel del Coronado Welcomes Christmas Author: Coronado Cookie Nov 29

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday ~ a day to gather with family and friends and simply appreciate all that we have. In addition to its own meaning, Thanksgiving is the kick off for the Holiday Season. I think the season officially starts at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the arrival of Santa Claus.

This weekend, as I drive, walk and ride my bicycle all over Coronado, I see houses being adorned with bright lights, decorated Christmas trees standing proud in front windows and store windows festive with holiday ornaments. They all seem to appear suddenly to herald the start of the holidays.

One of the most beautiful holiday tributes is the Hotel del Coronado outlined with 100,000 twinkling white lights. It is a magical sight as you drive west over the Coronado Bridge with the ocean and Point Loma in the background especially at dusk.

As I’ve said many times, Coronado embraces every holiday and celebrates each of them to the max. The Hotel del Coronado joins in the Holiday Season with gusto. Each year a theme is chosen and the resort is adorned from head to toe with holiday décor. This year’s theme is “Merry and Bright” and I am looking forward to experiencing the magic.

Although the lights have already been placed on the outside of the hotel, the official launch happens next Wednesday, December 2 from 4pm to 7pm. The event, called “Holiday Festival…A Family Celebration,” includes the arrival of Santa Claus and his elves at Santa’s Village, the lighting of the tree in the lobby, musical entertainment, hot cocoa and other libations and the opportunity to ice skate beach side at the outdoor ice-skating rink on the Windsor Lawn. The festivities will culminate with a spectacular fireworks show.

With the Hotel’s event on Wednesday and the upcoming Holiday Parade on Friday, by the end of next week Coronado will be in full holiday bloom. Coronado is one of the best places to experience some holiday enchantment. So, come on over and fill your spirit with holiday cheer.

Another Day in Paradise Author: Coronado Cookie Nov 21

Since moving to the San Diego area, my brother Bill has coined a phrase that he joyfully utters repeatedly, “Another day in paradise!”

That sentiment shows exactly how I feel about living in Coronado. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel very blessed and lucky to live here. Walking through the village, riding my bicycle along San Diego Bay, collecting shells on the beach while watching the dogs surf on Dog Beach – this is all a part of my life in Coronado.

And, it’s not just about the beauty here; a big part of the attraction of living here is the strong sense of community. Sure, we have thousands of tourists and visitors every year, but at its heart, Coronado is a small town with small town values. It is evident in our weekly community newspaper, The Coronado Eagle. Distributed every Wednesday, The Eagle is a free publication that keeps the locals up to date on Coronado news, events, sports, weddings, births, and deaths – all the things that happen in our daily lives.

Coronado is a “Navy” town and as such, there is also a strong sense of patriotism here. North Island is home to the Naval Air Station and in land mass encompasses more than half of the island. Many of those who currently serve or have served over the years have made Coronado their permanent home. When a ship deploys, yellow ribbons spring up all over town and when it returns the island is dotted with hand made welcome home signs.

Some of my favorite times in Coronado are during the annual special events. There is the Holiday Parade the first Friday of December, the Flower Show in April, the Summer Concert Series, the Independence Day Parade and the Halloween Open House. Participation runs high at these events and they highlight the spirit of Coronado.
