The Coronado Village Theater Nov 03

As many of you are aware, the Coronado Village Theater has been closed for many years now. I did a blog post – The Coronado Village Theater – back in January when word was released from Coronado Currents that renovation plans were in place and included restoration of the façade to its original grandeur and an interior remodel that would result in three movie screens and state-of-the-art acoustics all keeping with a 1940s era flavor.

Talk of the renovations went silent. Talk in town is that the cost of retro-fitting the theater discouraged the potential new owners.

Now, the buzz is that the owner of the property, Lance Alspaugh has decided to go forward with the restorations himself. In fact, I received this e-mail from Mr. Alspaugh this evening ~

Good Day,

Our efforts to restore and renovate the Village Theatre in Coronado continue.  The Exterior Concept for the Village Theatre renovation was recently approved by the Redevelopment Agency of Coronado.  We have attached a copy of the rendering for you and welcome any questions or comments that you or your readers might have.  We will have more developments in the near future.

Kind Regards,
Lance Alspaugh

I am hoping for the best. It would be wonderful to finally see the Village Theater back in operation and to see this currently sad, vacant wonderful property filled with life again.

Growing Up in Coronado Oct 22

I came across a wonderful video made by David Butler about growing up in Coronado.

The video is a compilation of photographs and oral histories from the Coronado Historical Association archives and features Bruce Muirhead, Lucille Bandel and Mickey Cunningham.

I always love looking at historical photos of Coronado, to see how much it has changed and to compare today’s venues with those pictured in the old images.

Coronado has changed a lot since the days depicted in this video. But, even with all of its changes and growth, it is still a wonderful place to grow up, raise children and to live.

Coronado Adult Education/ROP Sep 04

I am a perpetual student, always yearning and reaching out to learn new things. One of my avenues of learning has been the Coronado Adult Education/ROP Program, whose motto is “Exercise your mind and your talents…” Isn’t that inspirational?

For those of you who don’t know (I didn’t when I first heard the term), ROP stands for Regional Occupational Program. Their mission statement is “The mission of the San Diego County Regional Occupational Program is to prepare a diverse population, 16 years of age and older, for further education, employment and occupational changes.”

One of the wonderful things about the Coronado Adult Education Program is that you don’t have to be involved in the ROP to participate in many of the classes offered. So, throughout the years I have taken advantage of this opportunity for growth by taking art, writing and fitness classes.

When the Fall 2009 catalogue arrived in the mail, I excitedly scrolled through it. There were a number of classes that caught my eye, but when I saw Modern Dance – NEW! I thought, “That’s it, I’m going to take a dance class.”

I haven’t taken dance classes in many years and seeing that listing I realized how much I missed it – and how much I could use that form of exercise!

I was pretty sure the Modern Dance class was the one I wanted until I saw the listing for Nia Now! I had never heard of Nia, but the course description was intriguing. It said in part, “Tired of the same workout routine at the gym? Come try something new! Nia uses the combinations of Tai Chi, the creativity modern dance and the funky fun of jazz which all provides a cardiovascular and muscle conditioning workout.”

I had studied modern dance for years and I love Tai Bo, so Nia sounded like something I would really enjoy. I went to my laptop and did a Google search for it and found the Nia home website. I read about it and watched a few of the videos and…quite frankly was a little intimidated. But, as I said, I am a perpetual student always looking for new experiences. So I took a deep breath, completed the registration form and faxed it in.

In my next blog post, I’ll tell you all about my Nia experience to date…

PS The Coronado Adult Education/ROP make it so easy to register for one of their classes. You can register by mail, phone, fax, in person or online.

Patriotic Coronado Jul 08
Bunting on a Coronado Homefront

Bunting on a Coronado Homefront

Coronado is a very patriotic community. Perhaps in part to the fact that it is home to the Naval Air Station North Island and the Naval Amphibious Base. Even if that is at its heart, the spirit spreads throughout the community, military and civilian alike.

This spirit is particularly evident as the Fourth of July approaches. American flags are displayed throughout the year, but additional ones begin to spot the landscape in the weeks preceding the holiday. Bunting appears on balconies, walls and over doorways. Uncle Sam dolls, pinwheels and more adorn houses, condos and apartments.

No matter how large or small our homes are, no matter what each of us does for a living, we are united in our celebration of Independence Day and show our support , belief and appreciation for our freedom in a very colorful way.
