Great Day for the Coronado ACF Jan 17

The mood was joyful as City Staff, PAWS of Volunteers Directors and PAWS volunteers all gathered at the Coronado Police Department for the Badge Ceremony to officially acknowledge Officer Margaret Lawson to the department as the new Animal Control Officer (ACO).

Coronado ACF Staff

Officer Lawson with KAs Christina Kidd & Alayne Rosenstein

Officer Lawson has worked at the Coronado ACF for almost four years as a lead kennel attendant. When the opening for ACO arose, she decided that she was up for the challenge and applied for the position.

The process is very thorough with all applicants going through numerous interviews, back ground checks, and panel questions.

We were all pulling for Margaret and applauded each hurdle she cleared until finally the day came with the announcement that she had the job!

Margaret is a caring and compassionate champion for the animals and for the safety of the community. She has a quick smile and a gentle demeanor. The mother of two boys, she also has a firm hand that will serve her well when enforcing the animal control laws.

As for the ceremony itself ~ Margaret chose her husband to pin the badge on her uniform as Chief of Police Louis J. Scanlon stood by. As Commander of the Support Services Division Commander Laszlo Waczek along with Sergeant Eric Hima, in charge of Personnel, Senior Volunteers & Inspections were also in attendance.

We are all looking forward to the future of animal welfare in Coronado with Officer Lawson at the helm of the ACF with the support of the Coronado Police Department and her staff.

Stop by the ACF and meet and congratulate Margaret – take a tour if you haven’t done so yet and meet the orphaned animals looking for their forever homes.

PS On a personal note, I want to thank Margaret for taking this position, It has been an honor and joy getting to know her this past year and working with her to help the animals. I want to thank her family too for all of the support they give Margaret to make this all possible!

Coronado Christmas Home Front Dec 17

The holiday season has taken me by surprise this year. I’ve been busy with work and cat rescue and all of the little things of daily life that take up so much time.

One of the things that helps me get into the spirit of the season is watching the Coronado Holiday Parade. Only this year I was out of town transporting Diana the cat from the Coronado ACF to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

I was disappointed as it is the first parade I’ve missed since I moved here. But the holiday spirit doesn’t stop at the end of the parade. And I can get a heavy dose of the joy of the holidays just by walking throughout the village.

On my first walk about last week I let bright lights lead me up and down streets and avenues. At one point I heard Christmas music and turned the corner to see a home front on my left blazing with lights and decorations.

It was so very lovely, but it was from the home across the street that the music was coming. I turned and saw a home decked out from roof top to sidewalk. And right in the middle of the front yard was a trip of artificial Christmas trees playing holiday music as a light show played along their branches. I wasn’t the only one stopping for the holiday concert and light show – the delightful performance was drawing a small crowd.

It quickly became my favorite display and last night Bob and I put the top down on the car and went on a tour with this home being our first stop.

Happy Holidays!

Coronado Thanksgiving Winds Down Nov 27

As every Southern Californian and anyone watching the Chargers football game knows, the weather was spectacular today with a high of 85 degrees in Coronado.

As I walked to the library to get a couple of books on tape for my trip to Kanab this week, the sun was still shining. People of all ages were out and about sporting shorts and t-shirts, enjoying the “heat wave” as the newscasters are calling it.

Every extreme weather condition here is attributed to a Santa Ana, whether a torrential downpour or a heat wave. Today was no exception and most are thanking Santa Ana for the awesome weather. more…

Coronado Speed Limit Sep 03

Orange and B Avenues, Coronado CA

The grey haired woman was crossing Orange Avenue at B Avenue at about 12:25 pm. The sun was shining and a gentle breeze softened the heat of the day.

The woman was just about to step up to the curb of the median that ran down the middle of Orange when the squeal of tires announced the slamming of brakes. This was quickly followed by the unmistakable shattering of headlight glass and crunch of metal against metal. The air filled with the smell of burnt rubber.

The black pickup truck had missed hitting the woman by inches. She stood frozen on the median, hand to her chest.

This could be the start of a chapter to a mystery novel or the like, but it isn’t. It was a scene I witnessed earlier today from my window seat at Bistro d’Asia where I was having lunch with my husband.

The driver of the pickup truck had been going too fast and obviously did not see the woman crossing the street until the last second. His sudden and abrupt stop was in time to prevent him from hitting the woman. But it did not give the driver of the car directly behind him enough time to stop without rear-ending the truck.

Both vehicles pulled over in front of McP’s where I could see them get out to check the damage and exchange information.

The Law

The speed limit in the village and on most Coronado residential streets is 25 mph. There are also some areas where it is 30 mph.

For everyone’s safety, look for the speed limit signs and obey them.

Common Sense

Where there are a lot of pedestrians, it may not be possible or in the best interest of safety to go the speed limit. This is especially true in the village when the sidewalks and streets are filled with residents and visitors.

Although I do not have a radar gun to tell me how fast a car is going, I can tell when one is going faster than is legal and this happens a lot in Coronado.

It happened today and everyone involved was lucky that it did not end in tragedy.

Please respect our community and drive carefully to keep us all safe.

My Best,

The Coronado Cookie

P.S. Common Courtesy
Not a single person – either driver or witnesses stopped to ask the woman if she was okay. As we rose from the table to go out, she shook her head and finished crossing the street and disappeared into the crowd.

Coronado Christmas Ornaments Dec 12
Coronado Christmas Ornament

Coronado Christmas Ornament

Look at these lovely Coronado themed Christmas ornaments I found over at Café Press. I just love this Hotel del Coronado ornament. I may even keep it out after Christmas :-)

We were visiting with friends before the Coronado Holiday Parade where I delighted in my friend Victoria’s Coronado themed Christmas tree. She has collected an amazing array of ornaments that all have something to do with Coronado.

Liking the concept, I started to do some searching for Coronado themed ornaments of my own. What I quickly found were these wonderful ornaments at Café Press.

Whether you live in Coronado, have visited and have fond memories or dream of coming here one day, why not head over to Café Press and choose an ornament from their Coronado Ornament Collection?
