Coronado Vacation Weather Jul 14

Well, it is a little bit late, but the summer weather has finally arrived and hundreds of tourists are enjoying their Coronado vacation.

The thick marine layer has dissipated and the days dawn clear and sunny. For the first couple of days, I was startled by the brightness of the mornings and felt a little over exposed. Now I am once again used to the sun-filled days that are more the norm for Coronado.

Even though it is a week day, the Coronado beach is crowded, the sidewalks are filled and the streets are grid locked.

While I appreciate the draw to our town, the influx of hundreds and hundreds of tourists and day trippers can leave a local somewhat frustrated while trying to go about daily living. Luckily, I know the back roads, alleys and shortcuts!

I can’t begrudge the boost to our economy and to my friends who own businesses here. Nor would I deny anyone the experience of enjoying Coronado.

Coronado really has so much to offer visitors. So many come just for the beach, but as with any seaside town, some wonderful eateries offer delicious food. And, there is any number of delightful shops and places to stay.

One of the neat things about the layout of Coronado is that being in the village by the beach has a totally different feel it then being by the bay and the Ferry Landing. Luckily, since the peninsula is so small, you can visit and experience both.

What is your favorite, the village or the Ferry Landing?

Coronado Summer Solstice Jun 21

Today is the summer solstice and officially marks the start of summer in Coronado and elsewhere.

The first day of summer has dawned…cloudy. It is what we southern Californians refer to as “June Gloom”. A heavy marine layer – basically a fog bank that develops over the ocean – settles in overnight and lies sleepily between the earth and the sun, blotting out any ray of sunshine.

This time of year, I don’t need to look at the weather report to know that by noon the sun’s strength will burn through the marine layer forcing it back out to sea until sundown.

It is called “June Gloom” because it is a weather pattern that occurs during the month of June. In recent years this phenomena has started to infiltrate the days of May and is called “May Grey”.

With “May Grey” there are fewer days where the sun breaks through. With “June Gloom”, the cloudiness we wake up with tends to give way to the sun at some point during the day.

As I see children young and old filling the streets of Coronado whether walking, cycling, heading for the beach or just enjoying our small community, I am reminded of my own summers back East.

I have fond memories of long fun-filled days shared with family and friends. My mother used to lightly sing the Summertime, Summertime song. I had no idea where it came from, but I loved listening to its upbeat tune.

If my uncle were around, he would protest, “No, no, that’s too quick, summertime is about living easy.”

And he would start singing “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess. Although I preferred my mother’s catchy tune, I loved listening to my uncle sing. He would close his eyes and sway just a bit as he sang us his tune of summertime.

Whichever rhythm describes your summer, I hope you have a sun-filled, safe and happy one!

Another Day in Paradise Nov 21

Since moving to the San Diego area, my brother Bill has coined a phrase that he joyfully utters repeatedly, “Another day in paradise!”

That sentiment shows exactly how I feel about living in Coronado. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel very blessed and lucky to live here. Walking through the village, riding my bicycle along San Diego Bay, collecting shells on the beach while watching the dogs surf on Dog Beach – this is all a part of my life in Coronado.

And, it’s not just about the beauty here; a big part of the attraction of living here is the strong sense of community. Sure, we have thousands of tourists and visitors every year, but at its heart, Coronado is a small town with small town values. It is evident in our weekly community newspaper, The Coronado Eagle. Distributed every Wednesday, The Eagle is a free publication that keeps the locals up to date on Coronado news, events, sports, weddings, births, and deaths – all the things that happen in our daily lives.

Coronado is a “Navy” town and as such, there is also a strong sense of patriotism here. North Island is home to the Naval Air Station and in land mass encompasses more than half of the island. Many of those who currently serve or have served over the years have made Coronado their permanent home. When a ship deploys, yellow ribbons spring up all over town and when it returns the island is dotted with hand made welcome home signs.

Some of my favorite times in Coronado are during the annual special events. There is the Holiday Parade the first Friday of December, the Flower Show in April, the Summer Concert Series, the Independence Day Parade and the Halloween Open House. Participation runs high at these events and they highlight the spirit of Coronado.
