The Coronado Village Theater Nov 03

As many of you are aware, the Coronado Village Theater has been closed for many years now. I did a blog post – The Coronado Village Theater – back in January when word was released from Coronado Currents that renovation plans were in place and included restoration of the façade to its original grandeur and an interior remodel that would result in three movie screens and state-of-the-art acoustics all keeping with a 1940s era flavor.

Talk of the renovations went silent. Talk in town is that the cost of retro-fitting the theater discouraged the potential new owners.

Now, the buzz is that the owner of the property, Lance Alspaugh has decided to go forward with the restorations himself. In fact, I received this e-mail from Mr. Alspaugh this evening ~

Good Day,

Our efforts to restore and renovate the Village Theatre in Coronado continue.  The Exterior Concept for the Village Theatre renovation was recently approved by the Redevelopment Agency of Coronado.  We have attached a copy of the rendering for you and welcome any questions or comments that you or your readers might have.  We will have more developments in the near future.

Kind Regards,
Lance Alspaugh

I am hoping for the best. It would be wonderful to finally see the Village Theater back in operation and to see this currently sad, vacant wonderful property filled with life again.

Growing Up in Coronado Oct 22

I came across a wonderful video made by David Butler about growing up in Coronado.

The video is a compilation of photographs and oral histories from the Coronado Historical Association archives and features Bruce Muirhead, Lucille Bandel and Mickey Cunningham.

I always love looking at historical photos of Coronado, to see how much it has changed and to compare today’s venues with those pictured in the old images.

Coronado has changed a lot since the days depicted in this video. But, even with all of its changes and growth, it is still a wonderful place to grow up, raise children and to live.

The results of the Coronado Home Front judging by the Coronado Floral Association were published in the Coronado Eagle the week of the Coronado Flower Show.

This year, the judging team consisted of 93 volunteers. After looking at and judging single-family residences throughout Coronado and the Cays, they awarded more than 2,900 ribbons.

Blue ribbons were awarded for First Prize, Red ribbons for Second Prize, Yellow ribbons for Third Prize and White ribbons for Honorable Mention.

There were extra ribbons awarded in Coronado Village for the Best Home Front, the First Runner Up and the Top Ten Home Fronts.

As promised, I went and took pictures of the recipients of these additional ribbons. Come watch a short video of these Coronado Home Front Winners.

If you didn’t get a chance to see them during last weekend’s Flower Show, here is a list of the addresses so you can enjoy a drive around Coronado to view these spectacular home fronts:

Also,  the 800 block of  Glorietta Blvd was voted the Best Block.

The Coronado Village Theater Jan 13

We have lived in Coronado for 11 years now and the only two blights on an otherwise delightfully picturesque canvas are the Cora Mart and the Coronado Village Theater. You may or may not know of these two storefronts in the middle of the village on Orange Avenue between 8th and 9th streets if you’re not a local or are too busy looking at all the wonderful sights.

The Cora Mart has been closed for longer than we’ve lived here, although there was a brief stint as a teen center a few years back. Since then its front windows have been dingy and covered to hide the deteriorating interior. There is good news on this front – it has been verified that the neighboring Von’s grocery store has entered into a long term lease with the owners and plan on renovating their existing store and expanding into the Cora-Mart space. Of course that was to have already been completed…The only sign of any movement on that front was the sight of a man measuring the building and making notes on a set of blue prints last Spring.

The Village Theater closed a couple of years after we moved here and over the years there have been rumors of different people trying to negotiate a lease with the owners.

Finally, in this month’s issue of Coronado Currents, the details of the future of the theater have been outlined.

The only theater in Coronado first opened its doors in March 1947 and showed film classics and first-run movies for 53 years before closing its doors in 2000.

Coronado Currents reports renovation plans include restoration of the façade to its original grandeur and an interior remodel that will result in three movie screens and state-of-the-art acoustics all keeping with a 1940s era flavor.

This is great news to Coronado residents and visitors alike. To once again have a movie theater in the middle of the village will be a real treat. Note we’ll all have to wait a bit longer as the timeline for the renovation spans 18 months.

Well, we’ve waited this long, so I guess another year and half won’t matter. It will be fun and exciting to watch the progress and I’ll be taking photos along the way and posting them here so you can follow the progress too.
